IDU Data classification Framework - Technical FAQ
What Platforms does the Varonis IDU Data Classification Framework?
Windows file systems, SharePoint, EMC Celerra and Network Appliance NAS devices
What does the Varonis IDU Data Classification Framework do?
Based on a user-defined list of regular expressions and text strings that you provide to the Varonis IDU Data Classification Framework, Varonis DatAdvantage will then detect and identify these patterns within the contents of existing files.
How does the data classification framework handle encrypted or password protected files?
Currently the framework cannot. Any protected or encrypted files are not scanned, but their existence is reported separately.
Can I integrate results from an existing data classification process (e.g., DLP products or stand-alone data classification products)?
Yes – the Varonis IDU Data Classification Framework allows you to query and report on the framework of information, including results generated by an external classification process.
Does Varonis store the actual content of the scanned / detected files within the application?
No – the data classification framework only records the type of pattern and the location of the filename in question (including multiple matches in a single file).
How is the IDU Data Classification Framework more efficient than traditional approaches?
By understanding the existing framework of unstructured and semi-structured file systems, Varonis can target and optimize the analysis of file systems based on potential access controls (e.g., only folders accessible to domain users), realized access (e.g., accessed in the last 7 days) and, as a result, deliver immediately actionable results based on the risk profile of the business.
